Swimming Lots and Finding a Groove
Written by admin on May 27, 2009 – 9:09 am -Been MIA from the blog world, that’s what you get for inventing Twitter, 140 characters, that’s all it takes to keep you all posted. Since racing last weekend, this past weekend was a welcome change. Overcast, rain, no work on Monday, both Jess and I were on the same schedule, perfect. Planted some tress in the yard and fixed our swamp cooler (because i messed it up to begin with, and to correct my mistake otherwise pay an obscene amount to have someone else fix it). Weather is changing though, and I have forgotten somehow that I need to be taking in electrolytes when training. So heads up on the heat coming on.
Been trying to maintain my early season cycling fitness, that’s going well enough for me to back off a little and focus on the swim over the next few weeks, as open water ‘opens’. Swam today at the 5:45 am masters class at the Scott Carpenter Outdoor pool. 67 degrees. Freezing. I biked down there, and was cold to start. Swam 600 meters, couldn’t take it any longer. Ran for 40 min to warm up before cycling home. Hoping to get back in the pool later today, at one of the indoor pools.
As of Sunday, I still haven’t felt like my legs have recovered from the double race weekend. Which means I’m not quite recovered, and that my training needs to be more consistent than it has been over the past 3 weeks. But with races on the weekend, getting the ideal training in doesn’t happen all the time. I owe alot of my fitness gains to consistency. Keeping a shedule, deviating only slightly from the bigger plan. It’s worked so far. But this year with the extra cycling races, I’ve been thrown off a bit. Which is good in a way, especially this year more than any without an IM.
My running has been ok. I was spot on with my run training/volume last summer and fall. Again, a different year, different elements at play. From my run time at the sprint last weekend, on tired legs, racing a big hill climb the day before, and coming close to my PR, I’m ok with the way things are. It’s too soon in the season to be peaking, Need to build on each run. Taking seconds off hear and there would be ideal.
Back to swimming, last week was really good. Masters on Wed, big swim with Craig on Friday (800 TT), great swim with Jess on Sunday – where I surprised myself by hitting the times I needed to. Monday easy swim at the Scott Carpentar pool, Tuesday drill swim indoors, and then today, hopefully get some more this afternoon. Lots of pool time, dialing in my comfort level.
That’s pretty much catching you up on training. Warmer weather approaches.
