Thumbing It

Written by admin on June 24, 2009 – 12:00 pm -

So quite a change of pace for me over the past 24 hours.  After a great race weekend, and resting up Sunday and Monday, I was ready to start training again on Tuesday.  But that quickly wasn’t a possibility.  I slipped on my back steps and split my right thumb open, exposed bone, blood, pretty gory.  I didn’t hit anything sharp, it was just the impact of falling.  I turned to walk inside and show Jess, she thought I should get to the emergency room.  We raced off along Foothills parkway, and I quickly started to fade, sweating, dizziness…crazy how fast that happens.  Jess cruised in the breakdown lane and we got to the hospital i’d say in less than 10 min.

Walked through the front doors, and sat down so they could get my info.  After a few minutes, I started to shut down…the nursse said my eyes were rolling to the back of my head.  Blood pressure was 60, almost ready to seizure.  Pumped me with fluids, i as ok. Pain was bad.  The doctor pulled my skin back over the bone, i guess this type of injury is called ‘degloving’.  Try and google it, not pretty.  The good thing is that i have feeling at the tip, and my thumb and nail have been sewed back on.  i’m in a splint now, wrapped up pretty tight.

First thing i thought when it happened was A: am i going to lose my thumb and B: how am i going to shift on my bike.  Crazy what goes through your mind.  But I’m now out of swimming for at least 4 weeks, and probably serious training is on hold for a few days.  I see a hand specialist tomorrow, hoping i can site on a trainer and just spin for 6 hours a day…

Lesson learned though, I’ve been pushing work and not resting properly.  Moving too quick, not thinking about my surroundings, need to slow down.  Typing this took me a long time too, but i’m getting better at using my left hand.  I already brush my teeth left handed, guess i was thinking ahead.

Feeling in the tip is key! Whew….thought I was going to have to get myself a boyfriend for a minute.

Seriously honey – I never want to see a body part is such disarray every again. I’m glad you’re going to be alright. Your bp by the way, was more like 45…dangerously low.

  2. Gordy Says:

    Ouch! That sounds painful BJ

Take it easy (I know that word is not in your vocabulary) but rest will be the best way to heal.

Sit on the back steps and knock back a cool one – you’ll feel much better, I promise!

  3. Jackie R Says:

so sorry to hear about this BJ….. but don’t rush back too fast, give yourself time to heal.

I know just how you feel……never thought I would get to do anything again after I shattered my elbow……easy does it

  4. Tara Anderson Says:

Oh, BJ, I’m so sorry. If I wanted to make a bad joke, I would mention something about giving you a thumbs-up…but you know that’s not my style.

Your positive attitude, along with Jess’ support, will pull you through. I’m sure of it.

Your injury was nasty! So glad you’re ok! Keep your chin (and your thumb) up and you’ll be back in peak shifting form in no time! You’re an inspiration.
